The Afro Supa Heroes have landed at the Museum of Childhood in time for Black History Month!
Jon Daniel’s personal collection of childhood paraphernalia takes you on a journey through the eyes of a boy growing up in the 60s and 70s. When heros and heroines from the African diaspora were celebrated. Activists Malcolm X, Dr Luther King and Nelson Mandela were the cultural icons who pioneered the black Civil Rights Movement.
By the 70s, their influential message of justice was immortalised in comics, movies and music which aimed at forming a positive, black cultural identity. Action icons such as Mr T from The A-Team, Slade and Shaft from blaxploitation movies have dropped some of the coolest, one-liners that were popularised by international audiences. This exhibition is easy to navigate and exhibits rare and collectible toys of that era.
Afro Supa Hero is on at the Museum of Childhood from 14 September 2013 — 9 February 2014. For more information Follow @MusemChildhood and lookout for #AfroSupaHero
